2001
ALA Member/Vendor Golf Outing Recap
The Columbus ALA Member-Vendor Golf Outing continued its winning ways in 2001. After weathering torrential rains in 2000 and a postponement caused by the September 11 tragedy, we held what many felt was our best event ever. Highlights included a record number of golfing vendors (15), vendors donating door prizes (13), the first ever appearance by Alex Lagusch, the CBA Executive Director, the customary good weather, two beer carts, and of course, Janet Hannaway playing on the winning team. We sold mulligans for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, and conducted a 50/50 raffle for the benefit of Choices, an organization that helps abused women. Pete Condon won the 50/50 raffle, and graciously gave his winnings back to Choices! Randy Headley and Kim Eisner once again took the videos, group pictures, and generally cut up as we have come to expect from them.
First place honors went to the team sponsored by David Cathers of ComDoc, Inc., and captained by Janet Hannaway, with Jack "long ball" Stroud and Kim Rankin. Second place (with a 69) went, in a tie breaker on the second playoff hole, to the team sponsored by John Brookbank of BEC, captained by Cheryl Sparks with Karen Scurlock and Roger "don't call me retired" Yeley (he's had some time to practice). Third place, also a 69, went to the team sponsored by Bill Weiss (Fibre-Seal) and Annette Nick (Boise Cascade) with captain Ray Depler and Pat Hinte.
Bill Weiss and Rob Sander won the closest to the pin prizes, and Jack Stroud and Lori Muetzel won the long drive awards. Mike Hunt, who no one has ever heard of, tried unsuccessfully to claim the longest putt prize. The Golf Outing Committee disqualified Mike and gave the prize instead to the Most Honest Team, Tim Dimond (Pitney Bowes), Steve Odum, Cindy Meyer and Becky Von Ohlen. Integrity still does count for something. And last but not least, Lee Crume (IKON) won the coveted Jack Green Beaver Pelt Award. The PGA of America has now testified that Lee engineered and orchestrated the largest turf removal project ever undertaken in the United States, by scooping up countless divots, each at world record length. For this, he received a groundhog head cover.
Everyone had a great time due entirely to the support and generosity of our wonderful vendors. Not only do they underwrite the event, they share their sense of humor, friendship and company with us for an afternoon and an evening. On behalf of the entire Columbus Chapter of ALA, we the Golf Committee express our appreciation and gratitude to all of the vendors who did indeed give us our best event ever. They are: American Express Tax & Business Advisors, BEC, Berwanger Overmyer Associates, Boise Cascade, CBA, Columbus Paper and Copy Supply, ComDoc, Inc., Dopco, Fibre-Seal, Fireproof Records and Storage, Harper Engraving, IKON, Modern Office Methods, Pitney Bowes, Project Lawyers, Mark Blumenthal at McCloy Financial Services, Archive Reprographics, Blooms Direct, Continental Office Furniture, Staples, Thomas Ruff Furniture, ADP, Fifth-Third Bank and The Affiliates.
