The Community Service Committee was established as a means for the Chapter to give back to one of its biggest supporters: the Greater Columbus community. In the past, the Columbus Chapter has been involved in several community service projects: providing backpacks for children in support of an organization for victims of domestic violence, donating toiletries to the Faith Mission, collecting clothing for a group that helps women re-enter the workforce by providing interview-appropriate clothing, and hosting a Halloween party at an assisted living facility, just to name a few. Visit the Community Service page for more information.

Some of these projects are in conjunction with ALA's Community Challenge Weekend. For more information about that event, visit the ALA Headquarters website:

DIVERSITY INITIATIVES

Chair: Betsy Wetherby

(614) 227-8840

ewetherby@bricker.com

Created in 2001, the Diversity Initiatives Committee established a plan complementing the Columbus Bar Association's Diversity Initiative. The CBA's initiative was formed by a group representing the 20 largest firms in Columbus. These 20 firms all have members in our Chapter, so the creation of a Chapter Diversity Initiative was a natural step in achieving one of the goals of the Association of Legal Administrators: to "increase the sensitivity to cultural diversity in the association and in the legal management community." The Committee oversees the Chapter's Diversity Initiative, which includes conducting diversity awareness seminars and workshops, arranging for speakers, providing members with resource materials on workplace diversity and developing a plan to recruit minority administrators to the Chapter.

The famous Columbus Chapter Member/Vendor Golf Outing is held each year at a Central Ohio golf course. It is a great way for Columbus Chapter members to meet local vendors to the legal community in a relaxed setting (which is even more fun when it doesn't rain!). Turnout for the Golf Outing is high, due in part to the efforts of the Chapter Golf Outing Committee, who tirelessly helps the Golf Outing become a success year after year.

LEGAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Co-Chair: Kathy Rosenberry

The Legal Career Development Committee is now in its seventh year. The Committee meets once a month to discuss how to get students interested in the legal field and has four goals in which to achieve this task. They include: identifying sources of entry-level candidates and communicating with counselors and teachers of those programs regarding career development opportunities in law firms; developing partnering arrangements with schools for internships and shadowing experiences; providing speakers in classrooms to give information about career opportunities and general business practices, as well as provide practice interviews and resume evaluations; and to sponsor scholarships to selected students in the Columbus Bar Association Legal Secretarial Training Program.

MEMBERSHIP/MENTORING

Chair: Jack Green

(614) 365-2749

jgreen@ssd.com

Without members, the Columbus Chapter wouldn't exist! Therefore, the Membership/Mentoring Committee's goal is to make becoming a new member of the Columbus Chapter of ALA as easy as possible. New members are welcomed to the Chapter and are encouraged to get involved in different Chapter events. As potential members, many of them learn about the Columbus Chapter through our Membership/Mentoring Committee. The Committee is available to answer any questions that potential and new members may have regarding the Columbus Chapter.

NEWSLETTER

Chair: Cindy Wesney

(614) 462-4742

cwesney@bakerlaw.com

The Columbus Chapter's Newsletter Committee is dedicated to being a primary source of information for members of the Chapter. The newsletter, Columbus Chapter News, is published monthly and includes many items, such as announcements, the minutes and a recap of the speaker's presentation at the monthly meetings, details of upcoming Chapter and ALA events, helpful articles, and the Chapter calendar. The newsletter is mailed to all of the members, and in keeping with the ever-changing world of technology, the newsletter is also published each month in PDF format on the Chapter website.

PARTNERS' EVENT
Chair: Becky Von Ohlen

(614) 229-0030

bvonohlen@ulmer.com

Every year, the Columbus Chapter holds a Partners' luncheon or dinner event, usually in the Fall. The partners of member firms are invited, as well as potential members. There is a speaker for the event, and all members are encouraged to attend with the attorneys at their firms. Last year's partners' event was attended by more than 65 Columbus Chapter members, attorneys and guests.

PAST PRESIDENTS' COUNCIL
Chair: Becky Von Ohlen

(614) 229-0030

bvonohlen@ulmer.com

The Past President's Council is comprised of all current members who have served in the past as a chapter president, and all current board members. Its purpose is to provide leadership, knowledge and history to the chapter, and to spearhead special projects on behalf of the chapter. The Past Presidents' Council meets quarterly and has undertaken such projects as our vendor program as well as encouraging members to return to the monthly chapter meetings and become involved with the various chapter committees.

PUBLIC RELATIONS
Chair: Karrianne Mumper

(614) 223-9321

kmumper@bfca.com

The Public Relations Committee exists to spread the word about the Columbus Chapter of ALA to the Greater Columbus community. Past efforts include press releases when new officers are elected each year and a recent announcement to the legal community about current events and activities, such as the Member/Vendor Golf Outing and the Legal Career Development Committee partnering with the Columbus Public Schools and the Northeast Career Center.

REGION 3 REPRESENTATIVE

Chair: Cheryl Sparks

(614) 464-6303

cssparks@vssp.com

The Regional Council Representative serves as the communications conduit whereby information from ALA international and the region is conveyed to the chapter and its members. The Regional Council Representative is essential in providing information from the chapter and its members through the regional structure to the Board of Directors. The Regional Council Representative attends regional meetings at the regional and national conferences and reports the results of those meetings to the chapter.

SALARY SURVEY

Chair: Jack Green

(614) 365-2749

jgreen@ssd.com

The Columbus Chapter sends out a salary survey to the membership on a yearly basis. The results are then published and made available for free to members who choose to participate in the survey. The survey is also available for a fee to members who do not participate in the survey, as well as non-members and their firms and organizations. In 2003, the survey was done online and included statewide input ad results.

SMALL FIRM ADMINISTRATORS' FORUM

Chair: Richard Arndt

(614) 932-5000

arndt.dhs@hotmail.com

There are quite a few small firms in the Columbus area, and the Columbus Chapter Small Firm Administrators' Forum (SFAF) was established several years ago to meet the needs of legal administrators from those firms. The Small Firm Administrators' Forum Committee oversees the quarterly meetings of the SFAF in which different topics are discussed that pertain to the unique experiences shared by small firm administrators. Any current Chapter member working in a firm (or branch firm) with less than 20 attorneys is welcome to attend the meetings, which are usually held at the Columbus Bar Association. Contact the SFAF Committee co-chairs if you have any questions.

VENDOR PARTNERING

Chair: Rob Sander

(614) 221-5216

rsander@wileslaw.com

The Columbus Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators serves nearly 70 members, a diverse group of managers and decision makers who represent most of the law firms in the greater Central Ohio area. Recognizing the importance of vendors to its membership, the Columbus ALA designed a Vendor Program that promotes the development of partnership opportunities between our firms and the businesses that service our industry and contribute to our success.  The comprehensive sponsorship program developed by the Columbus Chapter gives vendors a unique opportunity to meet the people who make decisions in law firms. This program provides the networking opportunities at various social and Chapter-supported events throughout the year that will enable vendors to form and develop relationships. It also enables vendors to create name recognition and brand awareness.

WEBSITE/ONLINE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY

Chair: Donna Gilles

(614) 227-8820

dgilles@bricker.com

The Columbus Chapter website was created as a communication tool and a means of gathering and disseminating information to current members. It was also created to reach out to potential members, as well as the Greater Columbus community, to give them an idea of what the Association of Legal Administrators and the Columbus Chapter are about. The website contains membership information, announcements, a job bank, links, details about some our vendor sponsors, and more. Another feature of the website is the Members Only section, which includes among other things the online membership directory. Finding out how to contact Chapter members is just a click away.
